IF WE LOOK AFTER THE OCEAN,
IT WILL LOOK AFTER US
Project Kahurangi is a royalty-free visual library containing high-quality local New Zealand imagery and footage.
These resources are available for free to all non-profit groups, educational institutions, Iwi/Hapū and whānau kaitiaki to support their ocean conservation campaigns and communications.
Who can use the library?
Content is available to organisations doing the mahi for our ocean environment. If you are an organisation that advocates for a healthy ocean but are not a NZ registered charity please provide information about your organisation and the work it does. This will help us to make sure our imagery is used for its intended purpose of ocean betterment and not commercial gain. See if you are eligible here.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss alternative use please check out our FAQs or contact us.
Where can imagery be used?
Imagery provided by Project Kahurangi is licensed for use within the ocean conservation sector. If it helps our oceans then use, use, use! Imagery is not licensed for commercial use. That means imagery cannot be used for commercial gain. I.e if you are selling widgets, you cannot use our imagery to help you sell widgets. However, there are exceptions - for example, if your widgets are beneficial to the ocean environment then get in touch and let's chat about a separate license agreement.
Imagery is not licensed for third-party use and it can't be on-sold, redistributed, or re-licensed.
How can I support Project Kahurangi?
The best way for you to support Project Kahurangi is to show us how you are using it! Examples of the impact and benefit this library is having for marine conservation in Aotearoa is vital in helping us to generate funding to keep the library growing and free for everyone to use.
Please share your mahi with us either via social (tag @project.kahurangi and @itsliveocean) or email us.
Who is behind the project?
Project Kahurangi was conceived by photographer and videographer Gareth Cooke from Subzero Group after noticing that many New Zealand organisations working to protect the oceans were unable to convey relevant content in their communications. As an ocean lover and strong advocate for ocean health, Gareth wanted to use his skills to help amplify the ocean conservation message. Project Kahurangi was born.
The project was made possible thanks to Live Ocean Foundation and their generous supporters Joyce Fisher Trust, APL and several amazing individuals who care deeply about our moana.
Aroha and respect to you all.
